August Meeting

Good day Bonsai Enthusiasts,

Our August meeting went very well on Wednesday. More than 20 people attended to work on their trees and two new people joined the BSSJ bringing us up to 25 members. I’ve included photos on our Blog.

Here is the upcoming schedule for the rest of 2010. We will be meeting at Clover Garden Center unless otherwise noted:

-- September 15th, 7 PM to 9 PM, Ski Dombrovski on “Air Layering” as a way to inexpensively develop new trees and increase you collection. We will also be doing ongoing work on our trees.

-- October 13th, 7 PM to 9 PM, our first “show”. Bring your favorite tree or which ever tree you like and we will set up for our members to view and discuss. No criticism but discussion of how a tree may be improved. Alec Pettifer will also be giving a talk on moss and how to use it.

-- November 10th, 7 PM to 9 PM, Flex Houvig will be giving a talk on preparing our trees for winter. This is very important. More trees are probably lost because of improper treatment during winter storage than at any other time. We will also do some fall work on selected trees.

-- December 8th, 6:30 PM to whenever … Holiday Party!!!!!!!!!! Dr. Karen Harkaway has been nice enough to open her house for our Party this year. This will be a pot luck party with everyone bringing some goodies for us to enjoy. So get your cooking hat on and get creative and let us enjoy each other’s company and the season. Important: Spouses/significant others are invited.

**** We are also planning to develop a golf shirt with the BSSJ Logo for members to purchase. We are looking into costs, etc.

**** Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16th, 2011. The Mid-Atlantic Bonsai Society is having their Annual Convention and show at the Holiday Inn in Hershey, PA. Some of our members are going out for the three day show but we can plan to drive out in one or two vehicles to attend on Saturday. As we get closer to the date, I will provide more information about the show and our plans to go as a club.

I also wanted to mention it looks like you caught my ficus retusa grasping some indonesian driftwood (pic #3 above). I also wanted to let everyone know they can see the FRONT of this tree at:
